New England Revolution defender Ethan Kohler
Ethan Kohler has been impressive for the New England Revolution this year. A graduate of the San Jose Earthquakes academy, Kohler made the move to Germany when he was just 19 years old. After a two year spell overseas, Kohler returned to MLS with the Revs ahead of the 2026 season. It's been his first taste of consistent first team soccer, having mostly played for youth teams in San Jose and Germany. You wouldn't be able to tell based on his performances. Kohler has been great for a New England team which sits third in the Eastern Conference.
With 19 straight starts in MLS play, Kohler has become a big part of the Revolution backline. He's been so good that last year's starter was transferred to Montréal during the summer. In possession, Kohler is very comfortable and has an eye for forward passes. His security on the ball, along with his ability to break lines, is very impressive for a young player. What's even more impressive is his defensive capabilities. Kohler anticipates the game extremely well. He is one of MLS' best at blocking shots, and with his quickness, Kohler is adept at defending on the front foot. His speed also makes him an excellent recovery defender. Kohler has developed a great partnership with Mamadou Fofana in the heart of the Revolution defense, and he continues to show promise for the present and the future for New England.
Atlanta United defender Tomás Jacob
Tomás Jacob is enjoying a solid debut season in the MLS. He spent his first seasons as a teenager playing for Newell's Old Boys before making the move to Mexico. He played in just the Apertura for Necaxa, but was impressive enough that Atlanta United was willing to bring in the young Argentine. Jacob has been versatile and reliable for the 5 Stripes this season, primarily playing right back but also filling in at the defensive midfielder position.
Atlanta United has had a disappointing season, but Jacob has been a bright spot. He has started in 22 of Atlanta's 25 MLS games this season and has been the most consistent defender on the team. He has great ground coverage and is impressive in defensive duels. Jacob has also chipped in to the attack, registering 3 goals and 1 assist on the season. As Atlanta look ahead to the end of this season, and the sprint season in 2027, Jacob's defensive solidity is going to be essential to what they do going forward.
