Minnesota United forward Marcus Caldeira
It's been a productive rookie season for Marcus Caldeira. The Mississauga, Ontario native was drafted 20th overall by Minnesota in the 2024 Superdraft. After finishing his college career with West Virginia University, Caldeira joined the Loons. He dominated MLS Next Pro in the first half of the year, with 10 goals and 3 assists in just 16 matches. With Minnesota United struggling to score, Caldeira was given a chance with the first team during Leagues Cup. He immediately proved he belongs at this level, and has become a much needed source of secondary scoring for the Loons with 6 goals in just 613 MLS minutes. His start to Major League Soccer life was so good that he earned a Canadian National Team callup in the recent international break.
Caldeira has been an important addition to Minnesota's lineup. Obviously his nose for goal makes him an asset - any player scoring at a clip of .88 goals per 90 is going to make a team better. Caldeira is very good at finding chances and being in the right place at the right time in the box. These are key qualities for young forwards to have. Caldeira also adds to Minnesota's attack in other ways. While his combination play could be improved, his movement is very good and he brings an element of physicality. This occupies center backs, freeing Yeboah to find the game and have more room to operate with in the final third. While still a little unpolished, Caldeira has helped unlock Minnesota's attack in the second half of the season.
Austin FC defender Guilherme Biro
Guilherme Biro has been a standout for Austin ever since his arrival in the 2024 season. After 4 seasons in Brazil, Biro made the move to Texas to play for the Verde and Black. He is a reliable defender who is also calm on the ball, and he has become a fan favorite for his excellent defending and the edge that he brings. The Brazilian earned an All-Star appearance last season in his home stadium, rewarding his consistency in spite of Austin's struggles in recent seasons.
One of Biro's best traits is his aerial dominance. This hugely important for an Austin side that likes to play in a low block. He also provides a threat going forward, as he has scored three goals in each of his three seasons so far. Biro is also versatile: he can play left back or as a center back. This has been showcased this season, where he has been asked to slot into the left center back position under Davey Arnaud. He has been excellent in this role for many reasons. He is comfortable on the ball when they are in possession, he is a brilliant defender in isolated situations, which is very important for center backs who operate on the outside of a back three, and he is a great box defender, chipping in with key blocks and clearances. Biro has quietly been excellent for the Verde and Black over the last 3 seasons, and he is going to continue to play at his best if Austin want to try to make a late playoff surge.
